How to choose winter tyres?

We need to consider signs, size, quality and achievement of winter tyres when looking for the ideal one. Delticom has collected the most important related things to know.

As winter is approaching, it’s getting timely to change our summer tyres. If we also need to buy new winter tyres for ourselves, we might have hard time. What aspects have to be studied and what information do we need to find the best winter tyre, seeing the wide range of variety? Delticom has collected the most important things to know.

  1. Winterish or Winter Tyres?
  • Tyres with the sign of M+S (Mud + Snow) are mainly for overland cars or for the regular ones for which it is crucial that the wheels grip perfectly.
  • All Seasons” tyres are in an intermediate position between summer and winter tyres, and due to that, they are less reliable in extreme winter conditions.
  • We need to find a pictogram of a snowflake in a mountain if we are searching for tyres with excellent winter perfomance

  1. Size Matters

For the last couple of years, in major part of Hungary winter months have passed without any snow, so it’s not really worth choosing winter tyres which have thinner tread than our summer ones. If we want to know what size best fits in our case, we can get informed from the manual or the technical document of the car.

  1. Load and Speed Index
  • Load Index shows the maximum loading capacity when pressure is just as high as the manufacturer recommends it to be. We need to mind the fact that the four tyres together have to be able to carry a bigger weight than the total weight of our car (including the car itself, the passengers and the baggages).
  • Speed index (SI) indicates the maximum speed allowed for the given tyre.

  1. Question of Quality
  • Premium brands are suggested for high performance cars with a high speed – throughout their development, their long and daily usage is kept in mind.
  • Less expensive but still reliable quality brands are recommended to drivers who have low- or medium class cars and often drive in winter circumtances.
  • So called budget brands are for the ones who have a calm and easy style of driving, and for the ones who rarely use their car in winter.

  1. Think of saving money

Rolling resistance of winter tyres are higher than the summer ones and it affects our fuel consumption in a negative way. We need to choose fuel-economical tyres, if we don’t want to spend too much at petrol stations.
